Biomimetic Dentistry

Biomimetic literally means "mimic nature". The way we restore teeth focuses on emulating the perfect undamaged tooth that nature gave us to start with. Using advanced bonding techniques and bio-compatible materials, we re-create the biomechanics of this ideal. Teeth look great and we avoid invasive crowns and root canals with strong and nearly invisible onlays and fillings. You will feel confident knowing that we can restore your tooth to its natural strength and feel. Sensitivity after a filling is a thing of the past!!

The Two Principles of Biomimetic Success

Nature created our teeth to be able to withstand some pretty harsh conditions. Bite pressures can exceed 200 psi and yet the combination of hard, rigid outer enamel and "shock-absorbing" inner dentin provide a protective complex that absorbs these extreme forces and distributes them evenly through the teeth and jaws.

When decay or even a traditional filling is present, the protective complex of the tooth is lost and dentistry fails. Biomimetic bonding restores natural strength to the tooth and prevents the stresses caused by shrinking and expanding fillings as well as stresses from biting. The two foundational principles of this approach are:

  1. Treat Teeth Early
  2. Use Proper Techniques

Treating weakened teeth earlier, allows us to preserve the healthy enamel, thus providing a better foundation for the Biomimetic bonding. Early intervention is key to less-invasive treatment!

Proper Biomimetic bonding techniques save your tooth by:

  • Removing old bacteria and infection
  • Sealing out new infection & bacteria.
  • Eliminating sensitivity.
  • Restoring natural strength and function.

Non-Toxic Amalgam Removal

Biomimetic Dentistry restores your teeth to their natural strength, function, and appearance, but what about the process of dealing with the old fillings that need to be removed? The doctors at Prescott Dentistry follow a very specific protocol when removing old mercury-amalgam restorations to minimize exposure to the mercury and heavy metals released during this process. This is especially important to individuals that have chemical sensitivity, metal toxicities, or other environmental intolerances. These precautions may vary somewhat, based on the individual's needs and overall health goals. Below are some of the steps we may take:

  1. Protective eyewear
  2. Protective face/nose mask to minimize skin absorption of any mercury particles
  3. Tooth isolation system or dam that provides active air evacuation from the oral cavity. This minimizes exposure to particles, aerosols, and vapors released.
  4. Proper removal technique involving cutting out amalgam fillings in "chunks" where possible rather than pulverizing the amalgam.
  5. Breathing clean oxygen through nose mask to comfortable non-mouth breathing during the procedure
  6. Use of copious rinsing and cooling of the filling during removal.
  7. Chlorella herbal rinse and discussion of supplements to help detoxify following amalgam removal
  8. Several IV therapies such as chelation and supplements may be considered as well.

Individual circumstances will determine which precautions are needed or used. To have all your questions answered, contact us for a consultation with our dentist about non-toxic amalgam removal. You can also watch this informative episode from the Dr. Oz Show.

Material Biocompatibility Testing

There are thousands of dental materials that have been developed over the years and are used in practice today. Many individuals have chemical sensitivities that need to be taken into account before using these materials in their body. Prescott Dentistry is able to use serum testing to determine which materials are most biocompatible and biologically suitable for use in your mouth. Prior to proceeding with treatment, you may want to discuss material biocompatibility tests with your dentist.

Ozone/Oxygen Therapy

Ozone/Oxygen therapy is one of the dental services in Prescott AZ that has been used by biomimetic and biologic dentists for years as a way to naturally kill bacteria and promote healing. Ozone is a naturally occurring gas molecule which quickly breaks down to provide healing oxygen gas and active oxygen ions which kill bacteria. Ozone may be used in the form of ozonated oils for topical application or in oil pulling. Ozone water is used as an antimicrobial and healing irrigation when performing routine cleanings and treatment of gum problems. It may be used to treat infected root canals. Pure Ozone Gas is made from medical grade oxygen and is applied directly to teeth and/or tissues to disinfect infected teeth, treat sensitivity, heal deep tooth decay, and promote healing. It may be done with a localized application or with full-mouth ozone trays.

Ceramic Implants

Dental implants have for several years now, been the gold-standard in replacing missing teeth. There have been concerns, however, with the use of traditional titanium alloys being implanted into the jawbone and possible material sensitivity. We now have the option of using biocompatible ceramic materials for implants. Ceramic is biologically inert (non-reactive) and more compatible with bone and gum tissues. If you have missing teeth, you may want to consult with Dr. Montes regarding the suitability of metal vs. ceramic implants.

State-of-the-Art Technology

In order to provide the latest in holistic dentistry and minimally-invasive techniques, we need to incorporate the best technology and materials.

  • Laser Dentistry: Using dental lasers, the clinicians at Prescott Dentistry are able to perform a number of minimally-invasive procedures with much less discomfort for the patient. These procedures include treating gum disease conservatively and less-invasive soft-tissue surgery, all done in less time with better healing.
  • Digital x-rays: Prescott Dentistry employs only healthy digital radiographs which offer superior image quality for early diagnosis and significantly less radiation exposure when compared to old x-rays. This digital imaging allows the clinicians of Prescott dentistry to find dental disease earlier and treat problems sooner, when they're smaller.
  • Air Abrasion: A high-pressure air abrasion unit uses compressed air and abrasive sand particles to allow no-drill preparation of teeth. This sandblasted surface is also much better for establishing the adhesive bacteria-seal.
  • CEREC (Same-day) Crowns & Restorations: Using CEREC (CAD-CAM) technology allows us to deliver top quality restorations using biocompatible ceramic materials in one visit.
  • Intraoral Cameras: Special digital Cameras are used in our office are another method to diagnose dental conditions. The high-quality images produced by these mouth Cameras are enlarged to increase our Dentists ability to identify issues sooner such as failing and leaking fillings, decay, cracked and broken teeth and it allows the patient to see what the dentist sees in their mouth.
