Whiter Smile with Prescott Dentistry

No one enjoys smiling at someone knowing there are stains, discoloration or darkening of your teeth. We all want a bright white smile to greet those around us. Prescott Dentistry can help with all your cosmetic dental services, including whitening that brilliant smile of yours.

How Does Whitening Work?

The process is a lot less complicated that it seems. At Prescott Dentistry, our whitening process uses one of two different types of peroxide-based whitening solution; either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. The active oxygen in the peroxide naturally penetrates the pores in our enamel and breaks down stains (caused from substances such as, coffee, soda, tea, wine, blueberries, blackberries, pomegranates, smoking) into smaller particles, bringing back the natural color of your enamel and enhancing the whiteness of your teeth.

How Do They Whiten Teeth at the Dentist?

One important step to help whiten your teeth, is to have a professional cleaning. Our dental office has excellent, skilled dental hygienists who have the training and expertise to polish and remove surface stains from your teeth. This professional cleaning can help to remove the staining that occurs everyday and by itself make your teeth look brighter. After this, you can determine if you would need further whitening treatments.

The teeth whitening process involves taking impressions of your teeth and making custom-fit whitening trays. You then have a consultation with our staff and together evaluate the shade of your teeth and what you want to achieve with the whitening. We instruct you in using the whitening system and together, we get you the smile you want. The trays are convenient and comfortable and often you can’t even tell you are wearing them. Many patients wear the trays while working or while out and about running errands.

After Whitening

During and after teeth whitening, it’s important to know that some sensitivity may be experienced. Avoiding foods that are extremely hot or cold can help. Your dentist will have suggestions that can help alleviate and prevent this sensitivity. Along with whitening toothpaste, limiting smoking, and stain forming foods/drinks will help your white teeth last longer.
There is a bright side to every part of life, including your teeth! Seek out Prescott Dentistry today to help with your cosmetic dentistry needs.

Straighter Smile

Create a Straighter Smile with Cosmetic Dentistry

At Prescott Dentistry, we provide cosmetic dentistry services to help create a smile to be proud of. We want to partner with you to increase your confidence in yourself and your smile. Crooked or misaligned teeth can hinder your confidence and create insecurities. The truth is that you are perfect just the way you are, but we want you to feel that at all times. We are here to help.

Types of Needed Cosmetic Needs:

Crooked Teeth

Crooked teeth can be results of various aspects depending on the source. There are varying opinions of how crooked teeth are caused. The varied causes of crooked teeth are hereditary or nutritional issues, but it can also be due to incorrect jaw development, thumb sucking during teeth development, teeth crowding or other persistent gentle pressure. Even consistent tongue pressure on the teeth over a time has been said to cause crooked teeth. Whatever the cause, crooked teeth can be more difficult to clean, and can cause pain or difficulty in eating.

Misaligned Teeth

Misalignment of the teeth can create an overbite or underbite. This is when the top teeth overlap the bottom teeth causing an overbite, or when the bottom teeth overlap the top teeth causing an underbite. Causes of this also vary from losing baby or adult teeth early, having issues with prior dental restoration, gum disease, persistent pressure on the gums or teeth, incorrect jaw development or trauma to the jaw.

Straightening Your Smile

Straightening processes can varying based on the severity of teeth. Options for straightening include braces, invisalign or even surgery. To correct misalignment, once the teeth are straightened and if braces are chosen, then bands can be added to help shift the jaw back into its proper place. Seeing your dentist to gain insight into what your teeth need is best. The dentist can make a mold of your teeth for invisalign, fit you for braces or discuss if a tooth needs to be pulled to help with crowding of the teeth.
The straightening process can be anywhere from six months to two years. This time frame may seem long, but it is nothing compared to many years of feeling confident in smiling and not having fear of your teeth showing. The peace of mind that comes from straighter teeth is priceless.

Having a straight smile is a universally known sign of happiness and health. It communicates a friendliness when shown. To gain straight teeth may be desired for the visual impact it brings, or for more practical reasons of ease of cleaning. Either way, there are a couple ways to get straighter teeth. Your specific need will be best diagnosed by your dentist to ensure you on the right path towards the straighter, impactful smile you’ve been hoping for.

Prescott Dentistry Smile Makeover Winner Featured in Prescott Woman Magazine!

Prescott Dentistry Smile Makeover Winner

We are proud to share with our patients the inclusion of our smile makeover winner in this month’s issue of Prescott Woman Magazine. Two years ago Nikki Seguin won Prescott Dentistry’s Smile Makeover Contest and according to the article, which you can read here, her life has been positively changed ever since!

Utilizing biomimetic approaches, Dr. Montes and Dr. Thompson were able to completely transform Nikki’s smile which had staining, decay and gum disease–all without losing a single tooth! As we’ve discussed in previous blog posts, biomimetic dentistry is a less-invasive, more natural way of restoring and repairing teeth which allows the body to heal itself.

While Dr. Montes and Dr. Thompson didn’t expect to continue treating Nikki for two years, it just so happened that a little more time and care was needed in this case and Dr. Thompson was brought in to utilize Invisalign to realign Nikki’s teeth for a healthier bite.

Not only has Nikki been the recipient of the utmost care from Prescott Dentistry, she also became involved in Freedom Day through Prescott Dentistry and is now the City coordinator for Freedom Day in Prescott. She was the perfect fit being the Founder and Director with Serving Our Soldiers (SOS), an organization that provides care packages to active duty military and their families.

According to the article, Nikki has overcome the lack of confidence she had with her smile that overshadowed much of her life. She can’t thank the doctors and entire staff at Prescott Dentistry enough.  “Without them, none of this would have been possible,” she said.

“They are my angels.”

Men, want a long term relationship? Show off those teeth!

cosmetic dentistry for men

Are you looking for your future wife and partner in crime? Not sure why you can’t catch the eye of that special lady? Maybe try showing off that nice smile you keep so pristine with the help of Prescott Dentistry! The brooding, stoic look might work for a couple dates, but a study out of Senshu University in Oslo, Japan, found that women prefer men who smile often when it comes to choosing long-term partners.

The study, published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, indicated that women who were seeking a long-term relationship found men who smiled more attractive and more trustworthy than those with a neutral expression. Those women not seeking a long term relationship did not find the smiling men more attractive.  According to the study, women found men who were smiling to be more trustworthy and men who were neutral were seen as more masculine.

Researchers believe this distinction may be due to the fact that marriage and long-term relationships often involve parenting where long-term cooperation is necessary. More trustworthy appearing men are likely seen as more likely to take part in this long-term cooperation.

It can’t hurt to make that special someone show her teeth with a nice laugh either! An earlier study from the same publication found that the more men attempt to be funny and cause a woman to laugh, the higher the likelihood of her being interested in dating.

Want to make sure your smile is in the best condition when you’re out there looking for that special someone? Don’t forget your biannual dental visits and contact the team at Prescott Dentistry for any cosmetic dentistry needs you have in the meantime!

How’s your “selfie” smile?

selfie stick Cosmetic Dentistry prescott

When you pull out the ol’ selfie stick to  get a snapshot of you and the family having a great time on the lake, on a hike, or out to dinner, does the whole family smile wide? Are you proud to show off those beautiful pearly whites? Or are there a few hold-outs and pursed lip grins in the group? If there are, that’s not unusual.

A recent survey from The Oral Health Foundation indicated that people who take selfies (photos of themselves), particularly in the United Kingdom, more often smile with their mouths closed to hide their teeth than go with a “toothy” open mouthed smile.

According to the study, only twenty-nine percent indicated that they do in fact smile with their teeth when they are being photographed. Of the majority that that do not smile with their teeth, about thirty-three percent pointed to “discolored teeth” as the largest contributing factor to that decision. The second largest contributor to the shame people had regarding their oral state? Crooked or uneven teeth. About two thirds of those served did smile for these selfies, but most just chose to hide their teeth.

Another disturbing fact revealed from this survey? Fifty-five percent of adults revealed that they only brushed once a day. Not a great idea!

If discolored or uneven teeth are causing you to hide your best smile, contact Prescott Dentistry today to schedule your dental checkup, tooth whitening, or other cosmetic dentistry procedure today.

Video: How Does Invisalign Work?

If you are interested in straightening your teeth but want to avoid unpleasant metal braces, Dr. Montes and Dr. Thompson offer Invisalign in Prescott, AZ. The video above describes the simple, gradual process Invisalign utilizes to straighten your teeth without the need for unsightly metal brackets and wires irritating your gums. The video shows clearly the process from start to finish. Visit our previous blog articles to read about The Cost of Invisalign, Invisalign vs Traditional braces, and various other topics related to Invisalign in Prescott. Read the transcript of the video below.

“This patient has crooked teeth and a protruding front tooth. Invisalign can straighten the teeth and improve this smile.

How does Invisalign work?

After examination by your dental practitioner, impressions are taken of your teeth. Impression trays are filled with impression material then placed over your teeth. Once set the impression trays are carefully removed, your impressions and dental records are sent to Invisalign. The impressions are used to create a digital model of your teeth. Based on your dental practitioner’s treatment plan, the Invisalign software plans the movement of your teeth from their current position to the final desired position, allowing you to see how your teeth may look after the treatment.

Once your 3D treatment plan (ClinCheck treatment plan) is approved by you and your dental practitioner, a series of nearly invisible aligners are custom made for you. The aligners follow the stages of the treatment plan. You place the aligners over your teeth where they fit snugly.

As well as being nearly invisible, they are comfortable and can be removed for eating, drinking and cleaning. Every 2 weeks you switch to the next set of aligners. Each aligner moves your teeth stage by stage, little by little, resulting in a straight and healthy smile.”

For those of you who fit into both of the above categories, there is a solution! Dr. Montes and the staff at Prescott Dentistry now offer Invisalign in Prescott, AZ. There a few things that Invisalign and traditional metal braces have in common, but there are quite a few advantages that Invisalign has over it’s metallic counterpart.

What They Both Do Well

No one will argue that traditional braces, along with Invisalign, effectively straighten one’s teeth. Both Invisalign and metal braces can also treat any number of cases including spacing, crossbites, underbites, overbites and crowding. However, that is where the similarities come to an end.

The Invisalign Advantage

The following traits are unique to Invisalign, and mark where traditional braces fall short. Invisalign enables you to eat whichever foods you enjoy without worry. This is due to the second benefit: you can remove it whenever you want! Not only will you be able to eat all the same foods you currently enjoy, the entire teeth straightening process is virtually invisible which spares you a whole lot of grief and embarrassment. With Invisalign your office visits are cut to only once every 4-6 weeks!

Convinced that Invisalign is right for you? Contact Prescott Dentistry today to begin you path to a beautiful smile.

Invisalign: Beautiful Form Follows Beautiful Function

Invisalign Prescott, AZ

Your appearance isn’t the only thing that benefits from having straight teeth – your health does too! We all enjoy the look of straighter teeth, the beauty of symmetry that we are all innately attracted to. However, the following advantages are examples of how proper alignment with Invisalign in Prescott, AZ go beyond just appearance:

Healthy Gums

The warning signs of periodontal gum disease are painful, swollen, and red gums – which happen to be the same symptoms that crowded teeth cause. Teeth that are spaced far apart can also cause gum damage from impacted food. Properly aligned teeth make gums less vulnerable to decay and tend to be healthier than gums with crooked, crowded, or unevenly spaced teeth.

Healthy Teeth

Crooked and improperly aligned teeth cause many issues. Teeth that are too crowded can lead to cavities and decay because of the difficulty of keeping them clean. Improper alignment can lead to fracturing, chipping, and damaging teeth due to biting forces that are unevenly distributed.

Healthy Heart, Body, and Mind

As we have discussed in a previous blog article, your dental health is completely interconnected with your overall health. Gum disease has been linked to conditions including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Keep your dental hygiene in order as a first line of defense for your entire body.

Invisalign: Not Just for Looks

invisalign prescott

Vanity isn’t the most endearing trait in the world. In a society seemingly overrun with the vain and vapid it can be easy to dismiss an idea if it seems a little shallow at first glance. Invisalign might just be one of those products you tend to overlook. However, the benefits of using Invisalign Invisible Braces to straighten your teeth go beyond the cosmetics, and even go beyond not wanting the embarrassment of wearing metal brackets on your teeth for months to years.

First you might be wondering – why do I even need straight teeth? Isn’t it what’s on the inside that counts? Well, first of all, your teeth are on the inside! But all quips aside, the health of your gums and teeth can be negatively affected by crowding and misalignment. When your teeth are properly aligned, the gums fit tighter around the teeth, which creates the strongest defense against periodontal problems. In addition to the healthier gums straight teeth provide, they also can help eliminate issues caused by an improper bite, speech issues, jaw pain, and excessive wear on your enamel.

Then why not just get traditional braces?

Traditional braces, while effective at straightening teeth, can lead to issues with maintaining your oral hygiene. Food gets trapped in wires and brackets which tends to lead to plaque buildup and tooth decay. With Invisalign, you are able to remove the aligners and brush and floss your teeth normally.

The moral of the story: straight teeth are not just about looking good (though it doesn’t hurt!). Contact the staff here at Prescott Dentistry for more information on Invisalign braces in Prescott, AZ.
