Bacteria can get to the pulp of a tooth when it is either decayed or cracked. The bacterial by-products can irritate and inflame the pulp. It’s harder for blood to flow to the tissue when this happens and the resulting pressure creates pain inside your tooth. The Doctors at Prescott Dentistry understand the intense pain this causes and will do everything necessary to make sure you have a comfortable experience getting the quick treatment you need to feel better.
Endodontic therapy has three purposes:
– Stop the toothache
– Prevent bacteria and pain from spreading into the jaw
– Maintain the integrity of the original tooth and root to prevent tooth loss
In order to save your tooth, there are several steps in the process of endodontic therapy that either Dr. Montes or Dr. Thompson will perform. To make you more comfortable, a local anesthetic is usually given and some form of isolation will be used in order to keep your tooth clean and dry. A small opening will be made through the biting surface of the tooth to access the tooth “pulp”. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains blood vessels and nerves. The infected tissue and/or bacteria are then removed carefully from the root canal(s) and each root canal will be gently cleaned and shaped to allow it to be filled. To help eliminate bacteria, natural antibacterials may be placed in the pulp chamber and root canal(s). You may also be prescribed antibiotics if there are signs of infection that has spread beyond the end of the root(s). The root canals(s) are then filled, usually with an inert, natural rubber-like material called gutta-percha made from various tropical trees. Gutta-percha is very bio-compatible and seldom causes any reaction. Finally, the tooth will be restored with a protective onlay or filling to reinforce it and improve its appearance.

Straight teeth aren’t just pleasant to look at but also help keep you and your mouth healthy. That’s why dental products such as Invisalign are really important. There is research linking periodontal disease and several other health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or stroke. The mouth is the gateway to the body – it is almost always your first line of defense – your oral health really does matter!
Crowded teeth have a higher likelihood of decay/cavities since they are the hardest to keep clean. Also, when teeth are not properly aligned, bite forces are not distributed and chipping, fracturing and eventual tooth loss are likely to occur from the resulting trauma. This can lead to more dental work down the road – which can be both costly and uncomfortable. Remember, teeth that are properly aligned have less incidence of decay and are far healthier.
When teeth are crowded, the gums can become red, swollen and painful. This condition can lead to bone loss as well. This condition is known as periodontal or gum disease and is a result of buildup of plaque bacteria. The same can be said for teeth that are too far apart – food can get impacted deep in between the teeth and cause damage to your gums. Teeth that are properly aligned give the gums less opportunity for periodontal disease and are healthier.
So if you have ever thought about “straightening your teeth,” you are doing so much more than just gaining a “better smile.” Your teeth will likely need less dental work over the years as they are easier to keep clean and will not suffer trauma from misalignment. Your gums will be healthier as they are more easy to maintain and your health may benefit as well.
If you would like to know more about what straight teeth can do for your health, through products such as Invisalign, and how your goal for straighter teeth and better health can be achieved, please call our office to schedule a FREE consultation with Dr. Nathan Thompson.

Dr. Nathan Thompson came to Prescott Dentistry in the summer of 2012 after having served honorably for five years in the US Army as both an officer (captain) and dentist. During his time in the service, he was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, and also served overseas in both Iraq (Baghdad – Camp Liberty of the Victory Base Complex) and in Germany (Ansbach, Bavaria).
While in Germany, Dr. Thompson received extensive orthodontic training during a one-year internship and has completed hundreds of orthodontic cases (both traditional bracket/wire and Invisalign). As an Invisalign “Preferred Provider” Dr. Thompson has provided Invisalign treatment to many in our community including a few of our staff members at Prescott Dentistry!
Prior to his military service, Dr. Thompson received his dental training at USC where he trained 1-on-1 with the best BIOMIMETIC dental instructors in the country. Dr. Thompson’s training focus was in advanced bonded composites, porcelains and minimally-invasive restorative procedures. He is also a proud NAU (Northern Arizona University) Lumberjack, where he received his Bachelors of Science in Chemistry (focusing on Organic Chemistry and teaching in the “O-Chem” lab as a Teaching Assistant for three years). On his down time, Dr. Thompson volunteers with the youth of his church, serves as a Venture Crew leader for the Boy Scouts of America and spends as much quality time as possible with his beautiful wife and five children.
